Text Box: Academy Students Make Big Leaps

Mount Snow Academy snowboarders raised the bar at Okemo this weekend. Saturday’s slopestyle competition found 12 year-old Karen Kobayashi taking 4th place in the Breakers division and Mackenzie Quigley winning 3rd place in the Junior Women category.

Tyler Redes also placed 3rd in the Junior Men division.

On Sunday, both Karen and Mackenzie won 2nd in their divisions in the halfpipe event. Mackenzie earned the highest overall score for both events.

The big news in the Junior Men division was the 2nd place halfpipe win by D.J. Toroni. Head snowboarding coach Steve Kwasniewski was ecstatic. “D.J. rode extremely well,” said Kwasniewski. “He had a super run!”

Two Academy girls took 2nd and 3rd places in Friday’s Super G race here at Mount Snow on Friday. Mary Joyce skied determinedly to win her 2nd place spot and Kelsey Bresnan followed with a close 3rd. Another J3 Academy student, Elisabeth Sorenson, pushed herself way up in the rankings by taking 9th place. Alpine coach Andrew Norton praised Sorenson for her great run. “She’s been working so hard to improve, “ Norton said. “This is the pay-off. She was really willing to throw it down the hill in this race.” Go, Elisabeth!

Sean Reilly places 5th in the men’s J3 category.

The Academy freestylers competed up at the Sunday River (ME) Slopestyle Competition this weekend. Travis Heyer came in 20th in this “A” level event. Ryan Stagg placed 30th.

Finally, our condolences to excellent freestyler, Devin Logan, who separated her shoulder in a fall at Sunday River. This injury eliminates her from this week’s Aspen Open out in Colorado. Heal quickly!
