Jack Cusick of Fairfield, CT, finished tenth in a field of over eighty slalom skiers at the Alpine Eastern J3 Olympics, a premier event for young competitors ages 13 and 14. Held at Gore Mountain, NY, March 14 – 17, the J3 Olympics brought together top level skiers from around the East. Cusick qualified for the event with his performance at the J3 Vermont State Championships at Stratton earlier in the month.
Mount Snow Academy is a full-time, co-ed winter program for ski and snowboard competitors in grades 7 through 12. Students work one to one with different MSA subject teachers for each of their classes, following their home school curricula. They train at MSA’s slope-side location in southern Vermont, and compete regionally in their chosen sport discipline - alpine or freestyle skiing or snowboarding.
The podium at the Mount Snow Freeski Open was crowded with Mount Snow Academy students and alumni last weekend. Not only that, but there seemed to be a lot of siblings among the high fliers. Devin Logan of West Dover, 15, took first in half pipe and second in slope style among women. Her brother Chris Logan, an MSA alumni who turned pro last year, took the top spot in slope style on the men’s side. Abby Miles of Waterford, NY, and the Mount Snow weekend program took second in half pipe while her brother Nick Miles, another MSA alumni, placed tenth in slope style Also seen on the podium was former MSA skier Parker White of Dorset, who came in third in slope style.
Because of their placements in the USSA Junior Olympics, Devin Logan and Abby Miles earned spots at the Senior National Championships. This coming weekend, Logan and Miles will travel to Squaw Valley, California, to compete in against freestyle pros from around the country.
West Dover native and MSA alumnae Kelly Clark won second place in the super pipe at the Burton US Open at Stratton Mountain last weekend. Clark is tied with Torah Bright of Australia in that each holds a record three US Open gold medals.
Competing against younger snowboarders from around the world, MSA student Karen Kobayashi (Rye, NY) took fifth among girls in the half pipe at the US Open Junior Jam at Stratton on Sunday, March 22. The Junior Jam, for competitors ages 13 and under, is part of the 27th annual Burton US Open, a premier event for competitive boarders.
Eli Swing of Brookline was one of an elite group of young competitors attending the USSA’s Future Stars Camp at Okemo Mountain March 21 – 24. Swing earned his spot at the camp as a result of his first place finish among Alpine J4s (ages 11 and 12) in the Southern Vermont Council. Camp participants enjoy both special coaching opportunities and a chance to race against their peers from around the Eastern US.
